We have been training very hard this week in C-4 and C-2 with Ben, Tom and Jamie here in Dartmouth. Hard work requires serious refueling, here is the breakfast sandwich creation that Ben created for me this morning after a wild sprinting work out on Lake Banook.
My Dad always told me, "Never eat anything bigger than your head." I think this breakfast just makes it within that guideline.
After a bit of a wait, I have gotten the great news that I will be racing C-4 1000m at the World Championships!
This will be my 3rd time racing for Canada at the World Championships, and perhaps the most satisfying nomination to the team for me personally. After what has been an up and down season, I am very happy to get a chance to go race for Canada in a great C4 crew. I will be teaming up with Jamie Andison, Tom Hall and Ben Russell for the race in just under three weeks in Poznan, Poland.
Congratulations to my brother Angus Mortimer who got his first World Cup Medal this afternoon on the final day of the Duisburg World Cup in Germany. Angus fought his way to a Bronze, just staying ahead of Adam V who was fourth in the K-1 500m. The whole team had a strong World Cup season, things are looking good for the rest of the summer!
Here is a shot of Goose sharing the Duisburg podium with a couple of K-1 slouches.

Its the Monday after the first set of national team trials, and I am (along with a couple hundred other Canadian paddlers) taking a rest today and coming down off of the high and stress of our first big competition of the season.
I was completely shocked and saddened by the tragic crash today in Whistler on the Luge track that took the life of young Nodar Kamaritashvili. My thoughts are with Team Georgia and Mr. Kamaritashvili's family.

The new Rideau Canoe Club was framed out this week. It looks amazing!
Last night, I had the privileged of receiving the award for Ottawa Male Athlete of the year at the Ottawa Sport Awards. For the last 6 years I have attended the awards held annually at Algonquin College, and every year I have left the evenings festivities with a deep desire to one day win the over all athlete of the year award. I was taken by surprise last evening when my name was called for the award. As is common with many athletes, I am often guilty of looking critically at my own performances and trying to find ways to improve, instead of patting my self on the back.
This morning Johnny, Corey and I roused ourselves from our peaceful Sunday morning slumbers to take part in a 6km Time Trial at Nakkertok Ski Club in Cantley. We were joined by hundreds of local young skiers and by fellow Rideau paddlers Matt Raymond and Rhys Hill. It was a beautiful day up at there property and, as always, I was super stoked on the fun, warm vibe that Nakkertok always has for these events.
